Nuclear Decommissioning
In 1996 Alba Planning Consultants were contracted by WS Atkins to supply a planning consultancy service to UKAEA’s nuclear decommissioning department at Dounreay in the North of Scotland. APC worked with UKAEA’s Project Managers and Engineers producing and tracking detailed decommissioning schedules for the decommissioning of DMTR, Glove Boxes, Fuel Cells and associated equipment within the fuel cycle area. Schedules were developed at Base, 50% and 90% confidence levels and included project and external programme milestones.
Nuclear Stategy
From 1998 to 2000 APC provided a planning consultancy service to support the decommissioning strategy team in the development UKAEA’s first fully integrated decommissioning schedule. The schedule detailed the logical sequence of decommissioning all site facilities and infrastructure and included design and construction of new processing and waste storage facilities. This schedule gave senior management the tools to model various decommissioning scenarios. These included changes in external strategies, technological options, resource requirements, budget limitations and the impact of risk. This schedule was a key part of the submission presented to the NDA . The schedule was circa 60 years duration and had a value of over £4bn.
In 2004 APC was requested to return to Dounreay to work with UKAEA and CH2M Hill to identify a strategy to accelerate the site decommissioning programme. Alba were a key part of the team who successfully reduced the schedule duration by modelling various scenarios and quantifying confidence levels reducing the end date from c.2060 to a completion date of 2035 and giving cost savings of hundreds of millions of pounds.
